Time to move on, time to get goin´…there´s no way of knowin´

…the genius of Tom Petty

I´ve made it into Chile! Another currency to train my brain to calculate, another electric-plug adapter to use, another guard to bribe at the border (just kidding about the latter…barely). It´s a relief that this is my last border-crossing in South America, my heart always starts to palipitate a little each time I have to deal with a border official- you never know what tricks they might pull or what sudden fee they´ll charge for finding two potatoes at the bottom of your backpack (an American guy was charged $180 USD for such). Somehow I managed to sneak in a pack of meat, some cheese, fireworks from way back in La Paz, and some other contraband. You win some, you lose some.

I paused in Puerto Varas for a night to break up my journey to Chiloe Island. Puerto Varas is a funny little gingerbread house town probably built and definitely run by a German grandmother. If Bariloche was a chocolate-box Swiss village this is its tiny weinerschnitzel Deutchehaus cousin. But with any true German town comes good German beer, at last a relief from the watered-down Quilmes, Salta, Cusquena, Cristal, Pacena and on and on that I drank through Peru, Bolivia, and even Argentina.

Aside from the Little Germany theme, Puerto Varas also offers spectacular views of Volcan Osorno on a cloudless day:

Meet Manuel of Santiago. He summers in Puerto Varas and sports a terrific gay New York City circa 1989 look, breaking away from the cookie-cutter mold of the town. He knits fabulous scarves and jams out to Morrisey when he washes his vintage Volkswagen.
